Type One Nation Summit – Lancaster

The TypeOneNation Summit is a full-day educational and networking opportunity for the T1D community. The summit brings together T1D Experts to share their knowledge on the latest treatments, breakthroughs in research, and the psycho-social aspects of living (and thriving!) with T1D. Our event will feature a research update, a keynote address, multiple breakout sessions and workshops as well as unique opportunities for children and teens to meet and spend time with each other. Potential topics covered in the breakout sessions include: At what age is my child ready to manage their T1D themselves? T1D & Relationships in teenage years T1D & Relationships as adults Nutrition and T1D A Child's Independence Emotional Burden Please note all topics are potential. This list will be finalized closer to the event date. A research update will be offered for all attendees. A variety of topics will be covered in the update such as: artificial pancreas (what’s next?), clinical trial update and much more! In addition, the event will also include a vendor fair with representatives from diabetes medical device companies, insulin manufacturers, diabetes day camps, local healthcare providers, and other diabetes related organizations. This event is designed for all ages at all stages and offers something for everyone: parents, children, teens, adults, grandparents, caregivers, school nurses, healthcare providers, and more. Speakers Sanjoy Dutta, Ph.D. Assistant Vice President, Translational Development and International Partnerships at JDRF Sanjoy Dutta, Ph.D., is the assistant vice president of Translational Development and International Partnerships at JDRF. In this role, he strategically manages a portfolio of academic, biotech, and pharmaceutical initiatives and partnerships that evaluate a strong and promising pipeline of candidate drugs, devices, and related opportunities relevant for all ages and stages of type 1 diabetes. Previously, Dr. Dutta was the associate director of translational medicine and clinical biomarkers at Bristol-Myers Squibb, overseeing the metabolic diseases therapeutic area. He worked on multiple programs in early- and late-stage clinical development, discovering, developing, and validating markers of efficacy, safety, mechanism, genetic predisposition, and other aspects in diabetes and obesity. He was part of the team whose work led to the development of Onglyza and Forxiga, currently on the market for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Prior to Bristol-Myers Squibb, he was principal scientist of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases at Hoffmann-La Roche. Dr. Dutta obtained his doctorate from the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Southern California. He received postdoctoral training from the department of cell biology and the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard Medical School, where he developed and studied genetic models of diabetes. Vanessa Belani, Adult T1D Vanessa Belani has had type one diabetes for a little over 16 years. She is a strong advocate for living life to the fullest, despite some of the daily challenges diabetes brings. Vanessa is married and has 6 (yes, 6!) dogs. She is a nurse during the day, but by night she is an actress, occasional TV and red carpet host, and has a YouTube channel with a show called "Inspired", which is meant to inspire people to try new things and step outside their comfort zone. She also makes inspirational videos about diabetes- even a diabetic music video montage! On the weekends you can find her jumping out of airplanes- a hobby she started last year- insulin pump and all! Vanessa uses an insulin pump, and Dexcom G5 to manage her diabetes. She loves to educate people about diabetes and share what life is like for those living with it. Although she is honest about the frustrations and challenges- she also encourages those around her to not let diabetes stop them from doing anything they want to in life! She is very excited to speak at the type one nation summit in 2017, and is looking forward to helping inspire other people living with type one diabetes! Renu Joshi, M.D.F.A.C.E. Medical Director Endocrinology/ Director Diabetes Center of Excellence; Chair- Diabetes clinical initiative – PinnacleHealthSystem Dr. Renu Joshi is the Medical Director of Endocrinology and the Director of the Diabetes Center of Excellence, as well as the Chair of Diabetes Clinical Initiative at PinnacleHealthSystem. She is a resident of Mechanicsburg where she resides with her husband and two children.She is certified by the Amercian Board of Internal Medicine and she subspecialized in Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Joshi has been publicly recognized on many occasions throughout her career. She has received the Outstanding Lecturer Award in Endocrinology, Best Teaching Attending Award from the Internal Medicine Residents in Harrisburg, PA, Best Attending Presentation Award at PinnacleHealth, Harrisburg Magazine Best Attending Award, nominee for the Best Physician of the Year Award by Central Penn Business Journal and received the Healer of the Year Award from Harrisburg Magazine in 2014. Chelsea Lugone, Adult T1D & CRNP at WellSpan Endocrinology Chelsea was diagnosed with T1D at age 23. This led her on her professional path of wanting to help people with diabetes. She became a RN – then a CDE and now a CRNP at WellSpan Endocrinology. Chelsea's daughter, Kate, was diagnosed with T1D at age 3, she is now 6. Her son, Ryan, was enrolled in TrialNet where he was found to have 3 of the 5 T1D auto antibodies. He is now enrolled in a clinical trial at CHOP Dr. Kanika Shanker, MD at Summit Endocrinology Kanika Shanker is a trained pediatric endocrinologist from Emory University. During her training in Atlanta at Children's Health care of Atlanta, I have cared for children with diabetes both inpatient and outpatient. During my fellowship, I have received Helmsley Charitable award in type 1 DM. I believe in providing them with better resources to the patients and their families and enabling them to take care of themselves rather than instructing them of what needs to be done. Carol Burkhart Spicher, MS RD CDE LDN Carol Spicher, a Lancaster native, provides Medical Nutrition Therapy and Diabetes Education for PAL (Physician Alliance) patients and those referred from the community. She earned her college degree in Dietetics at Eastern Mennonite University, in Harrisonburg, VA. She completed a dietetic internship the following year at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. Her work experience includes: Hershey Medical Center, University of Pittsburgh, and Lancaster General, and Franklin & Marshall College. When she and her husband relocated to Lancaster in 1990, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. She is now a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) and an Insulin Pump Trainer. She started to work as a diabetes educator in 1992. Her favorite parts of her job are insulin pump management, and leading a Womens Type 1 Diabetes support group. Her husband, Jim, is an Internal Medicine physician at General Internal Medicine of Lancaster; Their 2 sons are also pursuing careers in Medicine. Carol enjoys walking, cooking & baking, gardening and riding a tandem bicycle with Jim. Carol’s extended family includes 4 persons with Type 1 Diabetes, all of whom wear Medtronic Insulin pumps…at least others are likely to have supplies to share! We ask that only type 1 diabetic children of age 6 and older attend.
